Sarasota A new mixed use tower has been proposed to be built in Sarasota Florida. Obsidian, reaching 342 feet in hight, would introduce incredible living for the gulf coast city. The current proposal calls for 14 residences with spectacular amenities including a rooftop pool and terrace, cigar and card lounge, wellness center, wine tasting room, and others. Further details are to be announced.

The project is currently under review by the Sarasota Planning Board. The proposed design has been sent for alteration by the board, requiring more retail space at street level. Residents and members of the board have also expressed concerns with the height of the building. The proposed height is roughly 80 feet higher than other downtown buildings, partly helped by what some opponents of the building characterize as excessive interstitial space.

The nature of real estate development is cyclical. A developer with a grand idea risks the time and capital to bring his idea to fruition. Along the way, though, he faces backlash, protest, and obstacles that threaten derailment. Some people have legitimate concerns, however most are simply resistant to change. In the end, though, the project is completed, albeit with some alterations. New residents happily enjoy their spectacular views, neighbors enjoy skyrocketing land values, and the community benefits from jobs created and a beautiful skyline.

Looking at Sarasota, even just in the past two decades, it is apparent this process has happened numerous times. Compare these photos of downtown Sarasota, 24 years apart.
